The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is marked as one of the best one-day trails in New Zealand, and some even say it is the best one-day trek in the world! The Tongariro Alpine Crossing trail leads you through the spectacular volcanic landscapes of the Tongariro National Park, both the oldest National Park in New Zealand and a dual World Heritage Site. It received this title in 1887 due to its outstanding natural features and its spiritual and cultural importance to the indigenous people. The Tongariro Crossing hike has a length of 19.4 km/ 12 miles and is not for the faint-hearted as the climbs can be steep with lots of loose rocks, and the weather is unpredictable. Having said that, walking the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is extremely rewarding as you will pass ancient lava flows, an active crater, steam vents, the Emeralds Lakes, and breathtaking views over glacier valleys. While the Tongariro National Park has been featured in Lord of the Rings, some other highlights of the trail are the mountains of Ngauruhoe and Tongariro, Red Crater - the highest point on the trail, and the Emerald Lakes. As the trail can be hiked both ways, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing start and finish could either be Mangatepopo Valley or Ketetahi Road. However, starting at the Mangateppo Valley is most popular.
Due to the challenges that come with hiking in an alpine environment, NZ Mountain Safety Council, has provided a great video to support you in your preparations:
