Description:

Kitaenko has been the Music Director of the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra since the 2011/12 season. As is typical of Kitayenko, who has the Russian repertoire in his own medicine, he has chosen to record his first work with the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra, "Symphony No. 1," Stravinsky's first symphonic work. This piece was written during Stravinsky's apprenticeship under Rimsky-Korsakov (around 1905), and it has a grand and beautiful tone with strong influences from Tchaikovsky and Glazunov. Even though this is a young work, the performance and sound of the orchestra are fully utilized, and Kitayenko gives the entire piece plenty of sound, including the roar of the brass at the beginning, the lyrical third movement, and the lively final movement. The two "Suites for Small Orchestra" recorded in the margins were originally arranged for orchestra from a piano suite. Both are a mixture of various dances, and Kitayenko emphasizes the character of each piece, making them short but highly enjoyable to listen to. Naxos Japan
