As the young Music Director of the English National Opera and Principal Guest Conductor of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra (Chief Conductor since 2015!). Edward Gardner has been a regular guest conductor at the MET and La Scala, and is a regular guest conductor at opera houses and concert halls around the world. Gardner is currently serving as Principal Guest Conductor for a new project with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, "Mendelssohn in Birmingham". The project is set in Birmingham, a city in England with strong ties to Mendelssohn. The third and final symphony in the series is Symphony No. 2 "Hymn". Also called a "symphonic cantata" for orchestra with solo voice and chorus, it is a large-scale work of over 60 minutes. The soloists are the Bevan sisters Sophie and Mary (Sophie won the Young Singer Award at The International Opera Awards 2013) and Benjamin Hewlett, two of Britain's most promising young singers. The overture to be included is the second in a trilogy of concert overtures composed between "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and "Fingal's Cave," the overture "Silent Sea and Pleasant Voyage," which describes Goethe's poem "The Silent Sea" and "The Pleasant Voyage.This highly anticipated series has received a great response from the first series "Symphony No. 4 & No. 5" and the second series "Symphony No. 1 & No. 3"!
