Description:
Akram Khan's version of "Giselle" (premiered 2016 / winner of the 2017 Laurence Olivier Award) is a bold rereading of the original world of the classic ballet and breaks new ground for the English National Ballet led by Tamara Rojo. Sound-designed for this production and set to a modern score by Vincenzo Lamagna, studded with images of the original music by Adan, this is a completely new "Giselle" deformed by the conflict between the working and ruling classes, the raw scandal of the present world and the absurdity of the other world. The first act takes place in a community of immigrants who work in a garment factory and are not accepted by the general public. The love and hate of Giselle, Albrecht, Hilarion, and others is intertwined with the agendas of the ruling class. In the second act, set in the ruins of the factory, the women workers who died after hard labor become Willi, summon the spirit of Giselle, slaughter Hilarion, and lay their hands on Albrecht. The story's themes of love, hatred, revenge, and forgiveness are posed to us today as more acute questions. Rina Kimbara, a promising new star, also appears in the film as one of the community.
