Carmignola and Brunello's Double Concerto Collection! Including Bach's masterpiece for two violins! The virtuoso Carmignola appears on the ARCANA label. Carmignola and Brunello perform the double concertos of Bach and Vivaldi in a surprising duo album. Here, Brunello plays the "Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin" in its entirety without transposition (A469/NYCX-10100) on a four-string cello piccolo. This instrument consists of the four strings of an ordinary cello plus the upper E string (Bach's "Suite No. 6 for Unaccompanied Cello" is said to have been intended for this five-string cello piccolo), and then omits the lowest C string to make four strings, as the album title Sonar in Ottava (sounding in octaves) suggests. As the album title "Sonar in Ottava" suggests, the strings are tuned exactly one octave below the violin. The violin and cello piccolo are played as solo instruments in concertos for two violins and strings, primarily Bach's famous BWV 1043. The two voices, usually difficult to distinguish because they overlap in the same register, are greatly enhanced by the fact that one is an octave lower than the other, which is even more pronounced in BWV 1060, where the two harpsichords are the originals (also familiar on violin and oboe). The result is an interesting exchange of words between the two, and a melodic pattern that is so interesting that the scales fall from one's eyes.The ensemble of Doni and Accademia Dell'Anunciata also adds a great deal of excitement to the competition between the virtuosos in a very up-front performance.
