Description

1854 Bank of Upper Canada Halfpenny Coin Pendant with St. George slaying the Dragon.  On the back is the Bank of Canada Arms.

The coin has a luminous copper patina and is in excellent condition.

Copper coin in sterling silver coin mount with a removable sterling silver bail.

Story

Benedetto Pistrucci, an Italian gem engraver, designed the British gold Sovereign in 1817.  This same image is used on the Bank of Upper Canada Penny and Halfpenny tokens. 

These coins are tokens created because of a coin shortage in the 1850s.  In this case the Bank of Upper Canada was granted the right to issue coinage.  The 1850 issued was struck by the Royal Mint in London.  The coins did not arrive in Canada until 1851.  In 1852 the dies and planchets were transferred to Heaton's Mint.
