Although Karajan boasts an unprecedented number of recordings (over 500), his Mahler recordings are limited to a very small number of works. This Symphony No. 9 was recorded between 1979 and 1980 as a session recording. The Berlin Philharmonic responds to Karajan's interpretation, which seems to pursue aesthetic beauty to the extreme, with all its might, and the overwhelming music evokes great emotion in the listener.
