The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2019 and is being released in theaters in cities across the U.S. in August and then throughout Europe. The film is interspersed with interviews with Miles' influences, including Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Quincy Jones, and Carlos Santana, as well as testimonials from family members, and examines Miles Davis as a person and his musical evolution from the bebop era to the electric era. The album includes a variety of recordings by various labels=S. The album also includes material from various labels such as Savoy, Blue Note, Prestige, and Decca.
