Description:

The Bad Plus released their self-titled 15th album, The Bad Plus, as a newly formed quartet. In many ways, it was a defining piece in their journey, both in terms of sound and in terms of member turnover. The Bad Plus released their self-titled debut in 2001 with Ethan Iverson (p), Reed Anderson (bass), and David King (drums) as the original members. The band gained popularity for its unique sound that blends rock and jazz, including a repertoire of covers of Nirvana, Aphex Twin, etc. In 2015, the group released a collaborative album with Joshua Redman, "The Bad Plus Joshua Redman," which made a splash. After the Village Vanguard show on December 31, 2017, pianist Ethan Iverson left the band and was replaced by Olin Evans; Olin Evans also left in 2021, and original members and composers Anderson and King decided to simply find a new Instead of looking for a pianist, they decided to take a big left turn and bring in new members Ben Monder (g) and Chris Speed (ts) to reinvent the band as a quartet. Ben Monder is a gifted guitarist who has played on major albums by Maria Schneider, Danny McCaslin, Paul Motian and David Bowie, and is currently active on the New York scene.Saxophonist Chris Speed is an award-winning leader/co-leader of numerous modern ensembles, including the band Human Feel, which he formed with Kurt Rosenwinkel, and a longtime musical colleague of King and Anderson. All eight songs on this album are King or Anderson compositions, and the unique sense of speed and energy that is their signature is still present. This is a record that pushes forward a unique approach to jazz with a fresh feeling like that of a debut album. If I can put out a record that has the energy of my debut album, it means a lot to me. This is about reinventing myself.
