Description:
As the name suggests, the composer of this opera is the third generation head of the Italian music publisher Ricordi. The first Giovanni amassed great wealth through the publication of works by Donizetti, Bellini, and Verdi, and the second Tito further developed the business, but by Giulio's time, Verdi was beginning to decline, and the era shifted to verismo. Giulio is said to have missed the boom of verismo, but he succeeded in rebuilding his business after discovering Puccini. Puccini placed great trust in him. Giulio himself dabbled in composition, and three comic operas remain. The "Stolen Bucket" is based on the 14th century battle between Bologna and Modena, and amusingly depicts the consequences of a defeated Bolognese soldier who steals a bucket from a well. Young Japanese soprano Kaori Yamada also appears in this production. Naxos Japan
