Assembly is straightforward with the included manual and labeled parts. You'll need a Phillips screwdriver (not included). The tiers stack and bolt together. Two people make assembly easier, but it's manageable alone. Most people complete assembly in 30–45 minutes.

The fir wood is finished with a water-protective gray varnish that resists moisture and UV damage. For maximum longevity, we recommend applying an outdoor wood sealant or stain every 1-2 years, especially in wet or humid climates. The self-draining design also helps prevent standing water that could accelerate rot.

Each planter box comes with a non-woven fabric liner. Simply place the liner inside the box, add your potting soil, and plant. When you water, excess moisture drains through the fabric and out of pre-drilled holes at the bottom of each tier. The fabric prevents soil from washing out. No additional materials needed.

The 4 tiers are perfect for shallow-rooted plants. Top tiers: herbs (basil, mint, thyme), strawberries, lettuce, or trailing flowers (petunias, lobelia). Middle tiers: compact vegetables (peppers, bush beans) or colorful annuals. Bottom tier: larger plants like tomatoes (determinate), zucchini, or decorative shrubs. Avoid deep-rooted crops like carrots or potatoes.

The weight limits (bottom: 220 lbs, second: 88 lbs, top two: 66 lbs each) are maximum recommended loads including soil, water, and plants. Exceeding them could stress the structure. We recommend staying within these limits for safety and longevity. For reference, wet potting soil weighs about 1.2 lbs per quart — each tier holds approximately 2-3 cubic feet of soil, well within the capacity when properly distributed.

Absolutely — the narrow 17.75" depth makes it ideal for balconies, decks, and patios. Ensure your surface can support the total weight (up to 440 lbs fully loaded). For high-wind balconies, we recommend securing the planter to a wall or railing (hardware not included) or placing it in a sheltered corner.
