This is a FULL-SIZE, EXACT recreation of the famous Apollo 11 boot print photo!
It measures approximately 11 inches by 16 inches by 1.5 inches! It is BIG!
Returning to the original Apollo photos as reference, artist Jeff Stanislawski greatly enhanced the photogrammetry model into a printable, accurate 3D sculpture. Details that were obscured by deep shadow in the photos were reconstructed, and the tiny rocks and mounds of dust adjacent to the boot print are faithfully reproduced.
The artisans at Acme Design in Elgin, Illinois 3D printed Jeff’s model, producing an accurate 1:1 representation of the historic boot print scene. The master pattern was then cast in super-strong resin for durability and hand-finished to resemble the fine, dusty lunar surface in every detail.
This product was originally developed by Master Replicas Group (MRG) back in 2019, and is now produced by SD Studios Ltd.
As part of his scientific duties during the Apollo 11 moonwalk, astronaut Buzz Aldrin photographed his own boot prints to document the compression of the fine-grained lunar soil.
In particular, the image of one of these boot prints captured the public imagination and became a visual icon of space exploration.
Although only two photographs were made of this boot print, artist Whitney Potter was able to derive photogrammetry, or 3D depth information, from the images. The resulting 3D model captures the details of the lunar surface and the complete shape of the boot print.
Because of the different process, they hand-paint each one of these, so the color will vary SLIGHTLY from unit to unit. But they have copied the original's color VERY closely!
