Measure your shaft's outer diameter — that becomes the seal's Inner Diameter (ID). Then confirm the housing bore diameter, which matches the seal's Outer Diameter (OD). Height (width) should match the groove depth in your housing. For example, a 25mm shaft in a 47mm bore typically uses a 25×47×7mm seal. Always verify with calipers before ordering.
TC-type skeleton oil seals are generally rated for low-to-medium pressure applications — typically up to 0.05 MPa (7 psi) of static pressure. They are designed primarily for rotary shaft sealing rather than high-pressure containment. For higher-pressure environments, a hydraulic rod seal or lip seal with a backup ring is generally recommended.
NBR (nitrile rubber) offers good resistance to petroleum-based oils, greases, and water splash. It is generally suitable for outdoor use in moderate conditions. "TC" refers to the double-lip design: a primary sealing lip that retains lubricant and a secondary dust lip that excludes contaminants. For optimal sealing, the shaft surface in the contact zone should generally have a finish of Ra 0.2–0.8 µm (8–32 µin). Avoid spiral machining marks, which can pump fluid past the lip. A hardness of HRC 45–60 in the contact area is typically recommended to minimize lip wear over time.
NBR rubber is generally compatible with mineral-based oils, ATF (automatic transmission fluid), and many hydraulic fluids. Compatibility with fully synthetic PAO or ester-based oils varies — NBR can swell slightly with some synthetics.
