Ormandy's early LP recordings of the "Rome Trilogy" from 1957-61 have been highly acclaimed as some of the best recordings of three of the most colorful orchestral works of the 20th century in the stereo LP era. The most important point is that Columbia's crisp and expansive "360 sound" captures the skill of Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra in reproducing with perfect precision the picture scroll of sound that Respighi wove with his large orchestra.
