Description:
An ambitious Minkowski interpretation of Mozart's music, featuring new and up-and-coming Erato singers and others, that conveys Mozart's innovative music beautifully! Composed by Mozart at the age of 14, this work made its debut in 1770 at an Italian opera house. Racine's tragedy is a compilation of historical facts and legends about the wars and human affairs surrounding Mithridate, king of Ponto, a country in Asia Minor in the 1st century BC, and the repeated cycle of war and revenge. These stories are depicted in the dazzling music of the young Mozart. Minkowski had previously staged Mozart's Salzburg Festival in 2006, the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth, and the production was to be presented in mid-November 2020 as the opening piece of the "Barocktage (Baroque Week) 2020" project of the Berlin State Opera. The production was directed by Satoshi Miyagi, artistic director of "SPAC," Japan's first cultural project group, which is based in a dedicated theater and rehearsal hall with dedicated actors and professional technical staff. Unfortunately, this performance was cancelled due to the spread of the new coronavirus infection. Instead of the cancelled performance, Minkowski and the Erato label gathered and made a studio recording just before the performance at the Philarmonie de Paris (December 2020, but it was cancelled).Although some of the singers who had scheduling conflicts were replaced by Elato label exclusives, the cast includes Michael Spires as Mithridate, who has a wide range and expressiveness from baritone to tenor; Sabine Deviel, a beautiful and captivating coloratura soprano; and Elsa Dreisig, a newcomer with a rich and luscious voice. The 111-page booklet includes lyrics (in Italian) and bilingual translation (English, German, and French only). Warner Music Japan
