Djimon Maile was a composer born in Germany and active in Italy. He left behind some 70 operas, but in his later years he chose as his subject matter the stories of medieval England, a subject that was of great interest to him at the time. This "Alfredo the Great" is one such work, which tells the dramatic story of Alfredo the Great, who fends off an invasion by the Viking army led by the Danish warrior Gutormo and rescues his beloved Arsvita, whom he was forced to marry by Gutormo.
