Latin name - Rubus niveus
Mysore raspberries bring the glory of backyard berry brambles to Floridians. Anyone who grew up in a climate with distinct seasons likely recalls picking raspberries and blackberries as a kid, heading home with stained hands and a full belly.
They’re native to Southern Asia and India, where they’re purported to be gastroprotective and “nutraceutical”. The juicy antioxidant-rich berries taste like a winning combo of raspberries and blackberries.
Mysore raspberries grow primarily upward in ‘canes’ which max out around 7-8’ tall. You can offer your raspberry plant a trellis, arbor, or other support for its upward growth habit. These long canes can be pruned shorter and *should* be pruned during autumn for increased yield. Pruning improves airflow and stimulates growth of lateral branches (where fruits are produced).
Plant your Mysore Raspberry in organically-rich soil that drains well and is slightly acidic. Raspberries will not spread from roots, so growth can be controlled. Growth habit is upward but lax and canes will droop if unsupported.
Pick Mysore Raspberries when they are deeply saturated with color, mostly black. Berries should be plump, but firm. Use caution when pruning and harvesting your Mysore Raspberry plants as they are covered with thorns, even on the underside of leaves. Wear gloves or be brave!
