Lilienstern, who was born in 1979, creates her works using sampler materials of commercials, 80s pop music, and other sounds she has heard repeatedly and often. These are highly commercialized sounds, so to speak, and although they appear to be meaningful collage materials, they do not imply any other meaning or subjective goodness or badness, but rather are pleasantly blatantly quoted. The unique atmosphere created by this is truly distinctive. Couture" was written for synthesizer and orchestra, and was commissioned by the Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra. One might expect a contrast between mechanical and live sound, newness and tradition...but instead, a very different kind of music unfolds. The synthesizers used in this piece are all from the 80's, and although they are considered masterpieces, they are already considered obsolete instruments. The tone of the music is based on 80's synth music, and the sounds of both are woven together in such a way that it is difficult to tell where the synths and the orchestra are. The fact that this is actually written in the score and performed by a symphony orchestra enhanced by tradition is also a strange sensation.Summit Top begins with a gated reverb-laden snare, followed by 80s hits, and ends with Van Halen's "Jump" at the end of the piece.
