Louise Giovanelli's Plexus (2024) is a signed limited edition lithograph presenting a tightly cropped close-up of cascading hair, rendered in luminous yellow-gold tones that hover between the organic and the metallic. The motif belongs to Giovanelli's ongoing series of wig paintings — figurative in origin, yet so radically cropped and compressed that the subject dissolves into a rhythmic sequence of undulating lines and pooling light.
This is precisely what Louise Giovanelli means by "slow looking" — her term for a mode of painting that withholds narrative and resists fast consumption. As she has put it: "I try to be much more oblique and mysterious, and give as little information as possible." The acid-gold palette gives Plexus a particular intensity: cooler and more unsettling than her warmer-toned hair works, it lends the signed print an almost mineral quality that sits at the threshold between the sensuous and the strange — the territory between the sacred and the profane that Giovanelli consistently occupies.
Giovanelli's work is held in the permanent collections of the Tate, MOCA Los Angeles, ICA Miami, and Manchester Art Gallery, among others. Printed on 300 gsm Velin d'Arches paper, the fine art print is hand-signed and numbered in an edition of 60.
