Heritage & inspiration

This piece draws from Bidjar (Bijar) Kurdish weaving as practiced in the small town of Bidjar in Kurdish western Iran (Kurdistan province), 19th–1930s. Bidjar weavers built a global reputation for the densest, heaviest, most structurally rigid hand-knotted rugs in the Persian tradition — sometimes called iron rugs because of how solidly they hold their plane on the floor. The Bidjar oval-medallion convention emerged in the late 19th century: a tightly-bordered oval set into a comparatively spare field, with restrained floral elements rather than dense pattern.

That structural seriousness translates well to the 1200 Reeds machine-woven register on a Dark Gray ground. The oval reads as architectural ballast rather than as decorative ornament — the rug holds its corner of a room the way a substantial piece of furniture does.

Crucially distinct from the cohort's Light Gray Aubusson oval sibling: same medallion shape, opposite cultural origin. Aubusson is the European court's adaptation of Persian vocabulary; Bidjar is the source tradition. Where Aubusson reads continental, salon, mediated, Bidjar reads Iranian, structural, primary.

Distinct from the rest of the DG cohort: the Heriz anchor is rectilinear village geometry, the Kerman sibling is court refinement, the Mughal sibling is ceremonial declaration. Bidjar oval is the structural-restraint Dark Gray.

How it feels underfoot

1200 Reeds (1200 شانه) on premium cotton warp; density over 3,000,000 knots/m² (تراکم). Same engineered consistency as the cohort. A real Bidjar would feel substantially heavier than this machine-woven piece does — the historical tradition's defining quality is wool density that approaches the weight of carpet underlayment. We don't pretend to replicate that. What this 1200 Reeds piece offers is the visual register and the compositional discipline of the Bidjar tradition, on a far more accessible substrate.

Spot-clean with mild detergent; low-suction vacuum; professional clean every 18–24 months. Not a machine-washable rug.

Stocked in the canonical cohort run: 3×6, 3×10, 5×7.5, 6.5×10, 8.2×11.5, and 10×13 ft. Oval medallions read strongest at 5×7.5, 6.5×10, and 8.2×11.5 — the medallion-to-field ratio is calibrated for these proportions. At 3×6 the oval compresses into a near-circle; at 10×13 the oval looks under-scaled to the field.

The Bidjar register pairs with rooms that have weight:

• Wood: walnut, mahogany, ebonized oak, dark-stained alder — substantial casegoods that match the rug's structural seriousness
• Upholstery: ivory linen, oxblood leather, deep navy velvet, mushroom mohair — the structural register tolerates strong solids better than busy prints
• Metal: aged brass, dark bronze, antique silver — avoid polished chrome (too cold against the structural register)
• Rooms: formal-restrained living rooms, primary bedrooms with substantial casegoods, libraries with leather upholstery, formal dining rooms with rectangular tables (the oval medallion sits naturally under the dining table)
• Lighting: warm 2700K — the dark gray ground absorbs cool LED and loses depth

Best for: rooms that want weight without floral elaboration — the Bidjar oval brings authority through compositional discipline rather than through ornament. Particularly strong in primary bedrooms, libraries, formal dining rooms, and reading-oriented sitting rooms.

Skip if the brief is relaxed-elegant (the Bidjar register stays formal), ceremonial-ornate (use the Mughal DG sibling), or European salon (use the Aubusson LG sibling instead — same oval shape, very different cultural register). Also skip in maximalist rooms; Bidjar's structural restraint reads as under-scaled next to dense pattern.
