Several years ago I found a figural needle lace medallion very closely related to this one--that one depicting a figure wearing an elaborate headdress I took for Native American (photo included in documentation). It seems quite likely then that a series of these were created, representing the traditional costumes of different cultures from around the world--whether by a single maker or done after a pattern I am not entirely certain, though I might now guess the latter. Whatever the case, finely--and very laboriously!--done, early 20th century I would guess. Such a wonderful array of patterns, from the webbed ground, to the zig zagging bands of her skirt, to the eight buttons marching down the front of her bodice. I especially like the gesture of the one hand on her hip and the other raised--and curiously (through necessarily I think) connected to her face, as if she were pulling on her nose and lip! All formed through a very elaborate entirely hand done process drawing from many dozens of threaded bobbins.
11” t x 6.5” w and in very good condition. There is no backing; photos against black ground are simply to better show details.
