This medium-sized species is endemic to most of central and southern Africa and is considered to be one of, if not the largest-ranging species of tarantula. It is a highly variable species, with many different morphotypes in the hobby that correspond to particular localities. This color form is known from Tanzania and Kenya and is found around the Usambara mountain range. Like many P. murinus color forms, this form was previously classified as a distinct species, P. mamillatus. This color form is one of the hobby's most iconic and well-known species.
