A shoot through is exactly how it sounds: the photographer shoots the subject through another object or item. Photographers often use shoot throughs to frame the subject, soften the edges of the image, or influence the story, composition, or mood of an image. In this two week course, Amy explores how shoot throughs can impact an image by taking a walk around some of her favorite outdoor locations, finding natural shoot throughs in the environment and showing how to use them in your images. Additionally, Amy explores how to think outside of the box and create your own shoot throughs by placing an object in front of your lens. This technique allows endless possibilities with eclectic results!

Week 1: What is a shoot through and how is it used? In week one we explore natural shoot throughs found in the environment and study how adding these elements can positively impact our image. Join Amy on a behind the scenes walk through of an outdoor garden where she finds natural shoot throughs in the surroundings. Watch as she explains where to place the subject and how to use the shoot throughs in the most impactful way.

Week 2: Step out of your comfort zone and experiment with your own shoot throughs. Amy explains how to use everyday items as shoot throughs to manipulate the textures and light in an image. From leaves and flowers to prisms and plastic bags, nothing is off limits! Amy shares how adding an object in front of your lens can flip your creative switch!
