Tastes like: Black Cherry. Crushed Raspberry. Violet. Cracked Black Pepper. Clove. Smoky Spice. Supple Tannins. Fresh, Savoury Finish.
This is the sort of red that reminds you why South Africa has become one of the most exciting wine regions on the planet. Juicy, peppery and packed with personality — proper fireside wine with just the right amount of wild Swartland energy.
The Secateurs Red Blend comes from the granite-rich slopes of the Paardeberg in Swartland, where Adi Badenhorst and his team work with dry-farmed bush vines grown without irrigation. The fruit is sourced from sites around Kalmoesfontein and Jakkalsfontein, helping bring layers of perfume, spice and freshness to the finished wine.
Typically led by Shiraz with smaller portions of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cinsault, the blend is fermented naturally in concrete tanks and old wooden fermenters using a hands-off approach in the cellar. Ageing takes place in old casks, foudres and concrete tanks, allowing the fruit and texture to remain front and centre without heavy oak influence.
There’s loads of juicy dark berry fruit here, but also that lovely savoury Swartland edge — pepper, herbs, earth and silky tannins all wrapped together in a wine that massively overdelivers for the price.
This absolutely sings with burgers, braised meats, smoky aubergine dishes or a giant midweek pizza.
