Red Coral is an organic gemstone formed from the calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) exoskeleton of Corallium species, a type of marine coral. It has a Mohs hardness of 3-4, making it relatively soft and requiring care to prevent scratching. Typically found in deep-sea environments, major sources include the Mediterranean Sea (Italy, Spain, and Tunisia), Japan, and Taiwan. Red coral is prized for its rich red to orange-red hues, which result from carotenoid pigments, and is commonly polished into cabochons, beads, or carvings for jewelry. Due to overharvesting, ethical sourcing and conservation efforts are increasingly important in its trade.
