Exmoor Sock is a trusty favourite around these parts, celebrating our Devon surroundings with local fibre in shades named in our traditional dialect of years gone by. It’s a workhorse yarn, hard wearing and perfect for creating your favourite, cosy socks, but it’s also dreamy in any 4ply project you can think of.  

Our Exmoor Sock yarn enhances the durable character and bounce of the fibre from our local Exmoor Blueface sheep – a cross breed of the Exmoor Horn (full bodied and hard-wearing) and the Bluefaced Leicester (renowned for its softness and lustre). 

We’ve added Falklands Corriedale to enhance softness and stitch definition, naturally dark Zwartbles giving extra bounce and a subtle fleck of colour, and a touch of Nylon for added strength and durability. 

Our Exmoor Sock yarn not only celebrates Exmoor, but is designed to be perfect for socks, whilst still having the versatility to suit garments and accessories that relish a hard wearing, machine washable yarn. It is available in 50g skeins for added versatility in small projects – making it easier to mix and match colours for stripes and contrast details.

Blend: 60% Exmoor Blueface SW / 20% Falklands Corriedale SW / 10% Zwartbles / 10% Nylon (SW = superwash)

Gauge: We do not give a recommended needle/hook size for our yarns, as everyone’s gauge is subtly different. It is possible to achieve quite a wide range of gauges with this yarn. A tighter gauge (more sts per cm/inch) will create a denser fabric and a looser gauge (fewer sts) will create a drapier fabric.

If you are substituting yarn for a pattern, we recommend comparing the meterage. If your yarn is within 25 metres of the given yarn per 100g then you should be able to happily get the correct gauge.

Colour Blending & Dyeing: For Exmoor Sock, we start by blending the fibres into their undyed shades, Mizzle and Drizzle. We then spin them up and send them on to our dye house where they get overdyed in the final colours. By dyeing on a grey base, the colours get a lot of depth and retain a bit of the heathering of the undyed shades.

Worsted Spun: All our yarns are worsted spun. This means the fibres are parallel to each other, giving them greater drape, strength and softness than a woollen spun equivalent would.

Superwash: Exmoor Sock is the only one of our yarns that contains superwash fibres. The Exmoor Blueface and Falklands Corriedale in Exmoor Sock are both superwash treated with the Hercosett method.
