The F-35B Lightning II is a fifth-generation, multi-role stealth fighter designed for short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL), making it adaptable for operations on aircraft carriers and short airstrips. Developed by Lockheed Martin as part of the Joint Strike Fighter program, the F-35B features advanced sensors, networked data-sharing capabilities, and low observability, giving it a significant edge in modern warfare environments. Equipped with a powerful Pratt & Whitney F135 engine, it supports missions ranging from air superiority to ground attack and intelligence gathering.

The Royal Air Force (RAF) and Royal Navy were early international partners in the F-35 program, contributing to the UK’s combat air power alongside the RAF's Eurofighter Typhoon. British F-35Bs first arrived at RAF Marham 617 Squadron (Dambusters) in 2018, where they have since been integrated into joint operations with the Royal Navy, notably on the Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers.

The Commissioning Parade at RAF Marham on 6 December 2023 marked the reactivation of 809 Naval Air Squadron (NAS) to operate the F-35B. Known as the "Immortals," 809 NAS was originally established in 1941 and has been a distinguished part of Royal Navy history, including service in the Falklands War. Now, as part of the UK’s enhanced carrier strike capabilities, 809 NAS joins RAF 617 Squadron in operating the F-35Bs, increasing the UK’s capacity to field seaborne stealth fighters in support of NATO and other defence objectives.
