The t-shirt features soul and funk pioneer, Curtis Mayfield, with "Superfly" text beneath. Best known for his period with R & B act The Impressions (whom he joined in 1956), this multi-instrumentalist/songwriter/producer played an active part in the American Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. He was thus one of the first soul-artists to introduce elements of politics & ‘social protest’ into the music( ‘message music’ as it became known). He was also an early pioneer of Funk music, noted for his unusual guitar-tuning (he used the black keys of the piano) & his singing in falsetto. His most famous work, the soundtrack for the Blaxploitation movie ‘Super Fly’, is widely regarded as being the most influential Afro-American album ever made.
