The opera "Susanna" by Carlisle Floyd, one of the leading contemporary American opera composers. Originally based on one of the short stories in the "Daniel" supplement of the Old Testament, in which a Hebrew wife is accused of an unjustifiable crime while bathing in a stream, Susanna is a beautiful 19-year-old village girl in this opera for which Floyd himself created the libretto. When men see her bathing in the stream, they accuse her of having caused them to have lustful thoughts, and she repents without knowing why. Susanna's disappointment is brought to the attention of the village's newly appointed priest, Orrin Britsch, who forgets his own identity and takes Susanna to a church in the village. He forgets his own identity and invites Susanna to his house... The story is known to be loved by Renée Fleming, a famous American soprano. Although there may be some controversy over the completely unredeemable ending, many will be able to sympathize with its sharp observation of the strains of modern society.
