Smoky Quartz is a transparent to translucent variety of quartz (SiO₂) that ranges in color from light gray to deep brown or nearly black due to natural radiation exposure affecting trace amounts of aluminum. With a Mohs hardness of 7, it is durable and widely used in jewelry, carvings, and ornamental objects. It forms in igneous and metamorphic rocks and is commonly found in Brazil, Switzerland, Madagascar, and the United States (Colorado and Arkansas). Smoky quartz exhibits strong clarity and is often cut into faceted stones or polished into cabochons, prized for its earthy tones and versatility in jewelry design.
